Huperzine A Dosage, Usage, Benefits & Reviews

Huperzine A (aka selagine) is a natural alkaloid which is normally extracted from the herbs of the Huperziceae family. Huperzine A is a memory-enhancing supplement that has taken the market by storm in recent years.

It is a natural supplement that has similarities with drugs that are known for effectively treating Alzheimer’s and is most famously known as a part of supplements such as Alpha Brain and Procera AVH.

Huperzine A has been shown to decrease a loss of memory in addition to improving memory and concentration. Interestingly, only small dosages of Huperzine A are required to benefit from the supplement. With that said, dosages should be monitored closely as overdoses have been shown to result in mild side effects.

How does Huperzine A work:

Huperzine A stops the breakdown of Acetylcholine and produces an increase of activity levels within the brain. Low levels of Acetylcholine are often a cause of many forms of cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. Taking a supplement like Huperzine A not only improves one’s memory ability but also protects against a future damage of brain tissues.

Doctors in clinical settings often prescribe inhibitors like Galantamine for people who experience memory loss because of its reputation for being safe and effective, but the cost of this pharmaceutical drug is greater than buying a supplement of Huperzine A that needs no prescription before use.

Effectiveness of Huperzine A:

“In one experiment teenagers that received the supplement were seen to have major increases in memory function.”

The experiment was administered on healthy teenagers who were not affected by any mental impairments. Another study conducted on students with memory problems at a Chinese middle school saw improvements following supplementation of Huperzine A.

These results may be even more relevant to individuals who are worried about experiencing memory loss in the future due to family history of neurological conditions. For example, recent studies have shown that improvements in patients with Alzheimer’s are seen only after two months of using Huperzine A.

A second study also came to the conclusion that patients who had a senile dementia saw improvements after two to four weeks of using Huperzine A. However, larger and longer term studies are needed to validate the claims, but so far the results have been very positive.

There are a number of other improvements that have been found while using Huperzine A, but have not been proven as fact yet. Various patients have seen a decrease in memory loss associated with their age and an increase in protection from different factors that may be detrimental to one’s central nervous system.

There have also been a few who have reported that the supplement helped them to regulate their ADHD symptoms, by boosting concentration. These results have the potential to multiply if you use Huperzine A with other brain boosting agents.

There are various ways of taking Huperzine A, including oral consumption and injection. If you are using the supplement you will see that it is common to find it as a pill that you need to swallow.

Injections are really only used in hospitals for certain types of situations. Doctors can inject Huperzine A to a patient who is suffering from muscle weakness.

If consuming Huperzine A orally, doses from 50 to 200 mcg should be taken twice a day. This level of dosing is common for patients with Alzheimer’s. Patients that are either pre-senile or senile have a recommended dosage level of two 30 mcg doses a day. For teenagers, two 100 mcg by oral consumption is recommended.

It is crucial to take the supplements on a consistent basis. If a patient stops their use of medication, they will revert back to pre Huperzine A form in 4 to 6 weeks.

Side effects:

There have been few side effects reported for this supplement and the few that are reported are often mild and insignificant. Some of the worst side effects include nausea, sweating, muscle twitches, and diarrhea. These side effects are common when one takes an overdose of Huperzine A, but there has not been enough research conducted to conclude if a long-term use could potentially cause other side effects.
