Modafinil vs. Armodafinil: What are the differences?

Modafinil vs ArmodafinilModafinil and Armodafinil are two closely related smart drugs. Both of these eugeroic agents are used to boost energy levels as well as enhance focus and alertness.

Modafinil (aka Provigil) was originally developed by a company called Cephalon (Lafon at the time). In 1994 doctors started to prescribe it as a treatment for narcolepsy (daytime sleep).

Armodafinil (aka Nuvigil) is an improved version of Modafinil developed by the same company. Armodafinil was first marketed in 2009. It has a slightly modified chemical structure compared to Modafinil to make it a more potent agent.

The clinical use of both drugs is similar as they are effectively prescribed to treat similar conditions. Modafinil and Armodafinil seem to work through hypocretin/orexin system (a neurotransmitter responsible for the regulation of sleep and arousal states). Users report more positive experiences when compared to more common central nervous system stimulants (e.g., caffeine). Interestingly, Modafinil and Armodafinil do not have usual side effects, like jitters, nervousness, increased blood pressure and pulse irregularities, associated with the caffeine use.

Both of these smart drugs slightly differ in terms of the effects they provide as well as the recommended dosages. This is discussed in more detail below.

    What is Modafinil?

Modafinil was one of the first drugs demonstrated to actually help the patients suffering from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea and other related sleep disorders (e.g., shift work disorder).

“For example, it is reported to help the users to settle into a healthy sleep pattern, while better controlling their sleep-wake cycle.”

This way patients can get valuable rest time which consequently reduces the feelings of fatigue.

More recently, people started using Modafinil without doctor’s prescription to feel energetic and awake. Reviews suggest that Modafinil provides dramatic improvement in focus, attention and thinking. Even simple daily tasks, such as reading or writing, then require much less effort.

Further, making mental connections and recalling information are done more efficiently. Additionally, some experience improved sensory perceptions with some effects reported on the appetite (i.e., promoting weight loss).

“All of these benefits effectively translate into higher levels of productivity.”

However, some of these effects do not last throughout the day, especially with a single administration. This is one of the reasons why Armodanifil has been developed.

    What is Armodafinil?

Similar to Modafinil, Armodafinil improves wakefulness in individuals with excessive sleepiness. Armodafinil has a longer half-life as it maintains higher plasma concentrations for longer. Peak plasma concentrations occur 2 hours post-ingestion. In addition to this, it is eliminated from the system approximately three times more slowly than Modafinil. Overall, Armodafinil has been developed in order to improve the pharmacokinetic profile of Modafinil.

Another difference between Modafinil and Armodafinil is that the latter does not disturb normal sleep patterns. Users are able to fall asleep and wake up in their regular time. Whereas Modafinil users tend to be sleepless for at least 5 to 10 hours following the ingestion of it. Different individuals perceive that as either a positive or a negative effect. Some users also take Armodafinil to help them cope with jet lag.

Although Armodafinil improves focus, it does not feel as intense as Modafinil. It makes Armodafinil a wiser choice for continuous use, while its predecessor should either be cycled or used only when required.

“This smart drug can improve productivity while retaining the effects of enhanced memory and fluent mental functioning.”

Users report an improved decision making and concentration levels following its use.

Even though it has been around only since 2009, there are more than 2 million prescriptions for this drug around the world. It is used by people from various backgrounds, including long-hour-shift workers, businessmen and students. However, Armodanifil may lead to dependence, thus small dosages (see below) and non-continuous use are two very important factors to be considered when using it.

    Armodafinil vs. Modafinil:

Modafinil and Armodafinil are both classified as Schedule IV drugs by the FDA. The key difference between the two drugs is their chemical structure. Armodafinil is essentially a purified version of Modafinil. Technically speaking, it consists of onlt the active component of Modafinil. This is why Armodafinil binds to the brain and body receptor sites in a different way.

The typical recommended daily dosage of Modafinil is 200 mg, while the more potent Armodafinil is usually administered at 150 mg/day dosages. It is important to note, that these dosages are used in patients, therefore healthy individuals should start by taking lower dosages.

Although, the same dose (i.e. 200 mg) of these smart drugs has been shown to lead to similar peak plasma concentrations, the concentrations 6-14 hours post-ingestion remain higher following Armodafinil administration. This just once again demonstrate that Armodafinil is more potent out of two.

There are mixed and sometimes conflicting opinions on the effectiveness of these smart drugs. Some users like Modafinil, others Armodafinil. This seems to be down to individual preferences and experiences. For example, some reviews claim that Modafinil is an effective mood and confidence enhancer, while Armodafinil appears to cause nervousness, stress and even aggression. In contrast, this is what is sometimes reported about Modafinil by other users.

Tolerance is another crucial point to take into account before taking any of these smart drugs. It is true that many users have been using these drugs for long periods of time and never felt the decrease in effects. Others, however, felt the tolerance build quite soon.

Modafinil seems to be the one associated with this problem much more often. The solution is to use it occasionally or cycle it on a regular basis. Again, Armodafinil may be a possible alternative, but make sure to discuss it with a healthcare professional before attempting.

    Buying Armodafinil and Modafinil:

If you are a resident of the United States, Canada, or United Kingdom, it is  illegal to obtain these drugs without a doctor’s prescription. They can be very costly too, amounting to hundreds of dollars/pounds a month.

Alternatively, you can get Adrafinil which is an effective compound to boost your mental energy and alertness. In fact, once ingested Adrafinil is converted into Modafinil by the liver. It is unregulated in the UK and is legal to buy in the USA.
